I wrote this song the night there was a fire in our building and we got evacuated—the night we met. I haven’t told you this but you’re the kind of striking that cuts off words mid-sentence, the kind of breath-taking that leaves thoughts incomplete, the kind of exciting that turns cynics into dreamers. This song is what I would say if I could formulate coherent phrases around you. Sorry I have no game.

Have you ever seen something so beautiful it took your breath away? I mean, literally took your breath away… Like, a physical reaction to a sight so powerful you could feel your lungs splitting underneath your ribs, as if someone had just punched you. There’s a statue in Rome, In the Palazzo Nuovo, marforio. I saw it in a picture once. That picture took my breath away. You were lying down in front of the statue.

For the most part…middle school sucks. Then high school sucks. And then college doesn’t suck…until it does. I’ve learned that the trick to getting out alive is making a conscious effort to surround yourself with the things that make you happy. For me, those things are: pop music, the internet, books about witches and wizards, TV shows about vampires and werewolves and the people who hunt them, vanilla ice cream with cookies or brownies, Chipotle, Disney, Nintendo, spending money that I don’t have and you. This song is about me. And you. And hopefully being happy for a long time.

I wrote this song about how badly I wanted to be good enough. At NYU, I’m sitting in classes with some of the most talented people I’ve ever met and for a really long time I didn’t feel like I belonged there with them. I worried that I didn’t sing well enough or write songs well enough or produce well enough. You told me not to think about anybody else, to find what was different about me and to run with it as far as I could… I promised you I’d never look back. I still haven’t.

It’s finally here. I’ve been working on this music for over a year now, sorting through my ideas and taking the time to explore new artistic territory and define myself as a songwriter, producer and performer. I sincerely believe that this is only a suggestion of what’s yet to come and I am so excited to share it and so much more with you.
